Hand Tame Baby Budgerigar Information

About Our Babies

Here at Pixie Paws Pets we highly value the care and attention to our budgerigars, the date they are available for pick up is not always the definite date they will be allowed to leave our home, we make sure 100% our baby budgies (Hand-Tamed & Aviary) are progressing properly before leaving date. This includes being weaned from their parents, cracking seed on their own and drinking water. We also make sure they are healthy. As they are a living animal, sometimes they maybe late bloomers - meaning late out of the nest - with this in mind, it can impact their RTGD (Ready to go date/s) from a few days to a week.

We hope you can respect and understand if this is does happen, we will keep you informed.

What is the difference between Hand-Tamed and Hand-Raised budgerigars?

One of our most common questions is;"What is the difference between Hand-Tamed and Hand-Raised?". We here personally Hand-Tamed our baby budgerigars and only Hand-Rear when absolutely necessary. For us this means, beginning from around 2-3 weeks of age, we will handle our babies for 10-20mins 1-2 times a day, as they get older we increase the time spent with each individual baby, once fledged and weaned we teach them step up and continue hand-taming indoors.

  • What is Hand-Raising

Hand-raised baby budgies are babies who are taken from the nest (usually at a young age) from 1-2 weeks old and raised by us, formula fed around the clock and are set up in an incubator or other types of nest box set ups with a temperature gauge, heater etc. In which we become the 'mother bird' for the baby bird.

  • What is Hand-Taming?

We allow the parents to feed and raise their young, with of course our monitoring their progress and making sure they are being fed and looked after properly from their parents. Hen's (Mother) will feed and raise their babies from hatchling till average 4 weeks old, then the cock bird (Father) takes over feeding the babies till between 4-5 weeks old. When a baby budgerigar is around 5 weeks old they begin the weaning process which includes learning to defend for themselves.
