Parrot-Approved: The Best Bird-Safe Nuts for Your Feathered Friend

Parrots find nuts to be very appealing, but it is important to note that they are high in fat and should only be given as occasional treats and not as a staple in their diet. Some species, like Macaws, can handle high-fat nuts and seeds and find joy in cracking open shelled peanuts. However, excessive consumption of nuts can lead to liver problems for other species. The nuts offered to parrots should be unsalted and suitable for human consumption. Varying the types of nuts can provide some variety in their diet and it is easy to determine which ones they enjoy the most. Large parrots can crack open nuts on their own, but be cautious of feeding fresh walnuts, cashews, and macadamia nuts as the shells contain harmful toxins when fresh. For smaller species, unshelled nuts are preferred with the exception of peanuts. All Nuts need to be unsalted and unroasted before giving to your parrots.
